Important information

Seeds of Abies nordmanniana may exhibit physiological dormancy. For more uniform germination, cold stratification is recommended.

Handle the seeds carefully, especially after germination begins, as the young root can be easily damaged.

Recommended germination procedure

1. Soaking

Place the seeds in clean, room-temperature water for approximately 12–24 hours.

After soaking, drain the seeds thoroughly.

2. Cold stratification

Mix the seeds with a slightly moist medium such as:

• vermiculite,

• perlite,

• fine, clean horticultural sand.

The medium should be slightly moist, but not wet.

Place the seeds and medium in a sealed plastic bag or container and keep them at approximately 2–5°C for 4–8 weeks.

Check the seeds regularly. If mould appears, remove affected seeds and provide slightly better ventilation.

Do not freeze the seeds.

3. Sowing

After stratification, sow the seeds in a well-drained seed-starting medium.

Recommended sowing depth: approximately 0.5–1.5 cm.

After sowing, provide:

• temperature: approximately 15–20°C;

• light: bright location, preferably with indirect light;

• moisture: keep the medium evenly moist;

• good air circulation.

The substrate should never be allowed to become completely dry, but it should not remain waterlogged.

4. Germination

Under suitable conditions, the first seedlings may appear approximately 2–6 weeks after sowing.

Germination may be uneven, so do not discard ungerminated seeds too early.

After emergence, avoid sudden temperature changes and excessive watering.

Seedling care

Young Nordmann fir seedlings grow best in:

• a bright location protected from excessive sunlight;

• moderately moist, well-drained soil;

• conditions with good air circulation.

Take particular care to avoid overwatering, as excessive moisture can lead to root rot and seedling loss.

Once the seedlings are well established and have developed several growth stages, they can be transplanted into larger individual containers if necessary.

Fertilization

Fertilization is not necessary during the first few weeks after emergence.

Approximately 4–6 weeks after emergence, gentle feeding can be started using a balanced liquid fertilizer at around ¼ of the manufacturer's recommended strength.

Alternative method – autumn outdoor sowing

The seeds can also be sown outdoors in autumn, for example in a container or protected seed bed.

Natural autumn and winter conditions will provide the cold period required to overcome seed dormancy.

For outdoor sowing, protect the seeds from:

• rodents and birds;

• excessive moisture;

• excessive drying of the substrate.

Germination will generally occur in spring, although emergence may be uneven.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Skipping stratification when the seed lot requires dormancy breaking.

• Keeping the seeds in excessively wet conditions.

• Allowing the seeds to dry out during stratification.

• Freezing the seeds.

• Sowing too deeply.

• Overwatering after emergence.

• Applying fertilizer too strongly to young seedlings.

• Exposing young plants to very strong direct sunlight.

Simple method for beginners

Soak for 12–24 hours → cold stratify at 2–5°C for 4–8 weeks → sow 0.5–1.5 cm deep → maintain 15–20°C → provide bright light → water moderately → wait several weeks for germination.
