Catalpa bignonioides – seed germination instructions
Catalpa bignonioides (Southern Catalpa) seeds are relatively easy to germinate and generally do not require cold stratification or scarification. With suitable warmth, light and consistent moisture, they can germinate readily.
1. Seed preparation
Before sowing, soaking the seeds for 12–24 hours in room-temperature water is recommended.
Soaking is not essential, but it helps hydrate the seeds and may speed up germination.
After soaking, sow the seeds directly into the prepared growing medium.
Cold stratification is not required.
2. Growing medium
Use a light, well-drained and well-aerated seed-starting medium.
A suitable mixture is:
-
2 parts seed-starting compost,
-
1 part perlite.
Moisten the growing medium thoroughly before sowing.
3. Sowing
-
Fill a clean container with the moist growing medium.
-
Distribute the seeds evenly over the surface.
-
Gently press the seeds into the medium.
-
Cover with a very thin layer of growing medium, approximately 2–5 mm (0.1–0.2 in) deep.
-
Water or mist gently.
-
The container may be covered with a transparent lid or plastic film to maintain adequate humidity.
Do not sow the seeds deeply.
4. Germination conditions
| Parameter | Recommended conditions |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 20–25°C (68–77°F) |
| Light | Bright light |
| Sowing depth | 2–5 mm (0.1–0.2 in) |
| Moisture | Keep the medium evenly moist |
| Ventilation | Regular ventilation, especially after emergence |
The growing medium should remain evenly moist but never waterlogged.
Once seedlings appear, begin regular ventilation and gradually remove the cover.
5. Germination time
Under suitable conditions, the first seedlings may appear within approximately 1–3 weeks.
Germination may be somewhat uneven, so keep the seed container under suitable conditions for several weeks rather than discarding it too early.
6. Care of seedlings
After emergence:
-
provide plenty of light,
-
maintain moderate and consistent moisture,
-
ensure good air circulation,
-
avoid overwatering.
When seedlings have developed 2–4 true leaves, they can be carefully transplanted into individual pots.
Take care not to damage the young root system during transplanting.
7. Fertilization
Young seedlings do not require heavy feeding.
Approximately 3–4 weeks after emergence, once the plants are well established, begin light fertilization with a balanced fertilizer at approximately 1/4 of the manufacturer's recommended dosage.
8. Common mistakes to avoid
-
Sowing the seeds too deeply.
-
Allowing the growing medium to dry out during germination.
-
Excessive watering.
-
Providing insufficient light after emergence.
-
Using temperatures that are too low.
-
Fertilizing too early or too heavily.
Important information
-
Cold stratification is not required.
-
Scarification is not required.
-
Soaking for 12–24 hours before sowing is recommended but optional.
-
Sow the seeds shallowly, approximately 2–5 mm (0.1–0.2 in) deep.
-
Keep the growing medium evenly moist during germination.
-
Germination may be uneven.
Recommended method for beginners
Soak the seeds for 12–24 hours in room-temperature water, then sow them approximately 2–5 mm (0.1–0.2 in) deep in a light, well-drained growing medium.
Maintain a temperature of 20–25°C (68–77°F), provide bright light and keep the growing medium evenly moist.
Catalpa bignonioides seeds do not require cold stratification.
