Malus sylvestris – seed germination instructions

Malus sylvestris (European wild apple / European crab apple) seeds have physiological dormancy and require a period of cold, moist stratification before they will germinate reliably.

No scarification is normally required.

1. Seed preparation

If the seeds have been obtained from fresh fruit, carefully remove any remaining fruit pulp and rinse the seeds thoroughly.

If the seeds are already clean and dry, they can be used directly for stratification.

Do not scarify or mechanically damage the seeds.

2. Cold stratification

The recommended method is moist cold stratification.

  1. Mix the seeds with a slightly moist medium such as:

    • vermiculite,

    • perlite,

    • or clean horticultural sand.

  2. The medium should be moist but not wet or dripping.

  3. Place the seeds and medium in a sealed plastic bag or closed container.

  4. Keep at approximately 2–5°C (36–41°F) in a refrigerator.

  5. Stratify for approximately 8–12 weeks.

  6. Check the seeds periodically to make sure the medium remains slightly moist and to monitor for mould.

If a seed begins to germinate during stratification, transplant it carefully into a suitable growing medium, taking care not to damage the emerging root.

3. Sowing

After completion of the cold stratification period:

  1. Fill a clean container with a light, well-drained seed-starting medium.

  2. Sow the seeds approximately 1–2 cm (0.4–0.8 in) deep.

  3. Cover gently with the growing medium.

  4. Water thoroughly but avoid waterlogging.

  5. Place the container in a bright location.

4. Germination conditions

Parameter Recommended conditions
Stratification temperature 2–5°C (36–41°F)
Stratification period 8–12 weeks
Germination temperature 15–20°C (59–68°F)
Light Bright light after sowing
Sowing depth 1–2 cm (0.4–0.8 in)
Growing medium Moist but well drained

Maintain even moisture after sowing. Do not allow the growing medium to dry out completely.

5. Germination time

After successful stratification, germination usually begins within approximately 2–4 weeks under suitable conditions.

Germination may be uneven and some seeds may require additional time.

Do not discard the seed tray prematurely if some seeds have not germinated.

6. Care of seedlings

Once seedlings emerge:

  • provide plenty of light,

  • maintain moderate and consistent moisture,

  • provide good air circulation,

  • avoid prolonged waterlogging.

When seedlings have developed several true leaves and a sufficiently developed root system, they can be carefully transplanted into individual pots.

7. Fertilization

Young seedlings do not require heavy fertilization.

Approximately 3–4 weeks after emergence, once the seedlings are well established, begin light feeding with a balanced fertilizer at approximately 1/4 of the manufacturer's recommended dosage.

Increase feeding gradually as the plants develop.

8. Important notes

  • Cold, moist stratification is required for reliable germination.

  • Do not allow the seeds to dry out during stratification.

  • Avoid freezing the seeds.

  • Germination can be irregular, even after successful stratification.

  • Fresh, properly stored seeds generally provide better germination results.

  • Excessive moisture can lead to mould, seed rot and damping-off.

Recommended method

For the most reliable results, mix the seeds with a slightly moist medium and keep them at 2–5°C (36–41°F) for approximately 8–12 weeks. After stratification, sow the seeds 1–2 cm (0.4–0.8 in) deep and maintain approximately 15–20°C (59–68°F) until emergence.

Important: stratification in a refrigerator

A household refrigerator is suitable for cold stratification, provided that the seeds are kept in a clean, slightly moist medium and are protected from drying out.

Do not place the seeds directly in water during the entire stratification period.
