Seed Germination Procedure – Trident Maple (Acer buergerianum)

Common name: Trident Maple
Botanical name: Acer buergerianum
Family: Sapindaceae

1. Seed preparation

Soaking the seeds before stratification is recommended.

  1. Place the seeds in clean, room-temperature water for 12–24 hours.

  2. Drain the water thoroughly after soaking.

  3. Do not remove or mechanically damage the seed coverings.

Soaking allows the seeds to become fully hydrated before the stratification process begins.

2. Cold stratification

Trident Maple seeds exhibit dormancy and generally benefit from moist cold stratification.

Recommended conditions:

  • Temperature: 1–5°C (34–41°F)

  • Duration: approximately 8–12 weeks

  • Medium: slightly moist sand, vermiculite, perlite, or a mixture of peat and perlite

Stratification procedure

  1. Mix the soaked seeds with a small amount of slightly moist stratification medium.

  2. Place the mixture in a resealable plastic bag or suitable container.

  3. Store it in a refrigerator, away from the freezer compartment.

  4. Check the seeds at least once a week.

  5. The medium should remain moist, but never wet.

  6. If mould develops, remove affected seeds and increase air exchange.

After completing stratification, sow the seeds as soon as possible.

Important: The required stratification period may vary depending on seed freshness, origin and seed-lot characteristics. If some seeds begin to germinate during stratification, carefully transfer them to the growing medium.

3. Sowing

Use a light, well-drained growing medium.

Recommended mixture:

  • 50–70% peat or coco coir

  • 30–50% perlite or coarse sand

Sow the seeds approximately 1–1.5 cm (0.4–0.6 in) deep.

Cover the seeds lightly with the substrate and water gently. The container must have adequate drainage holes.

4. Germination conditions

After sowing, provide:

  • Temperature: approximately 15–20°C (59–68°F)

  • Light: bright, indirect light

  • Moisture: keep the substrate evenly moist, but not waterlogged

  • Ventilation: provide good air circulation

Avoid both complete drying and prolonged saturation of the growing medium.

5. Germination time

Under suitable conditions, the first seedlings may appear approximately 2–6 weeks after the end of stratification.

Germination can be uneven, so do not discard the seed tray too early.

6. Seedling care

After emergence:

  • Provide a bright growing location.

  • Protect young seedlings from very strong direct sunlight.

  • Water moderately.

  • Do not allow the growing medium to dry out completely.

  • Maintain good drainage and ventilation.

Transplant young seedlings carefully, as their developing root systems can be easily damaged.

7. Fertilization

Fertilization is not necessary immediately after emergence.

Approximately 4–6 weeks after emergence, once the seedlings are well established, begin feeding with a balanced fertilizer suitable for young plants.

Start with approximately ¼ of the manufacturer's recommended concentration.

8. Alternative method – autumn sowing

The seeds can also be sown outdoors in autumn in containers placed in a sheltered location.

Natural autumn and winter conditions provide the required period of cold and moisture. The seeds may then germinate naturally in spring as temperatures increase.

Protect outdoor containers from rodents, birds and excessive waterlogging.

Important notes

  • Trident Maple benefits from moist cold stratification.

  • A practical stratification period is approximately 8–12 weeks at 1–5°C.

  • Do not allow the seeds to dry out during stratification.

  • After stratification, sow the seeds approximately 1–1.5 cm deep.

  • The recommended germination temperature is approximately 15–20°C.

  • Germination may be uneven.

  • Excessive watering is one of the most common causes of seed and seedling loss.

Simple method for beginners

Soak the seeds for 12–24 hours → cold-stratify in a moist medium for 8–12 weeks at 1–5°C → sow 1–1.5 cm deep → maintain 15–20°C and even moisture → provide a bright location → expect seedlings to emerge approximately 2–6 weeks after stratification.
